New Events in Familar Places

Growing up in Durham North Carolina doesn't exactly strike anyone as amazing. When you compare Durham to cities like New York, San Fransisco, or Miami it can appear quite bland, but its home and funnily enough it can be quite interesting, I mean it is a college town, you know something has to go down.

My first day back home from school, when all I want to do is lay in my bed until the end of time my mom had a little surprise, (I guess our parents are similar in that capacity). Downtown Durham was having a Art walk, hosted by the arts council and local shops. I would usually jump at an opportunity like this, but considering I just started vacation from art school where events like this can be made mandatory for class, it was last on my list of to-dos. Boy was I wrong, We walked around and browsed a few booths and galleries, all with local artist handmade goods. Who knew such interesting art pieces could be found ten minutes away from my home. On top of the the weekly farmers market was going on where they sell the best kettle corn on the planet! and no I'm not exaggerating, the best! (conveniently in a bright red mobile truck, yes i thought about driving it home, but I didn't think grand theft auto would look good on my resume)

So thank you Durham arts council for and amazing day that I would have wasted otherwise.

I haven't been home for one day and my parents made my sister and I go on a hike. First I put up a fight but then i decided it might be nice after sitting on a train for 15 hours. I guess my parents hike this trail a lot because we ran into some people that recognized them. They were like, "Oh you're the one that has the dog that is afraid of other dogs." My parents will talk to anything that moves. The hike turned out to be fun. We went off the trail and hiked all the way to the top of Rockland County! Its very weird to travel up the coast during this time of year because we started in Savannah, which is still green, to the Carolinas which which is in fall and then as you get closer to New York it becomes winter. Fall is my favorite so I am glad I was able to experience it for a few hours as we drive right through to winter. If you're ever in New York during this time of the year a hike is definitely required! It is so beautiful and the air is so fresh.

Music Sharing Party

I am obsessed with twitter, it started out as nothing but slowly grew into an full all out problem. My amazing blackberry fueled this addiction and now there is no stopping it. Like my relationship with coffee twitter has become a part of my everyday life as I hope I am a part of its'. and while on this marvelous social site i began to notice a trend, blogs I follow always tell me the music they are listening too. This practice is definitely bumping up my song collection with some pretty awesome tunes and so I thought we at Scuttlebutt could do the same... so here it goes. My new musical preference is this amazing band out of the UK called Marina and the Diamonds. It is very poppy and almost Gaga-esque and you definitely have to be in the right mood, but I find that every time is the right time for Marina, her new video debuted recently So check it out....

Inspiration Needed Please

senior year is approaching faster than I admit I would like. It means sleepless nights of sewing and work are very near, its an exciting time and a stressful time. My senior collection is in the works and right now is the fun part, research. I'm in the best city in the world for it, Manhattan. I'm making friends with fabric store connoisseurs, visiting countless museums, and observing the bustling streets, the question remains, what I can incorporate in my senior project? It is a long process, narrowing everything down is insane. Here are a few images to see the direction I'm heading......

The Uniform

My summer in New York kicked off on June 7th, Kaitlyn's started the week before and Sami's internship starts on the 21^st . We all have these amazing opportunities to work for some fabulous companies located directly on Fashion Avenue. Through all of our excitement we hit one snag, what do we wear! In a world all about the clothes on your back it becomes desperately important to dress the part. Thankfully my birthday was only a few short days ago and I was able to convince my parents shopping would be the best birthday present. Normally shopping would be full of fun and frivolity, this time however was slightly different, and I had to be smart about it. What is too dressy, what is appropriate but comfortable enough for all day wear and what exactly does business casual mean?? Too many questions and just not enough clothes on sale that fit. So after a slightly successful shopping trip (I mean I did get 3 new pairs of shoes) I have come to a new decision for the summer…diet!

I'm assuming all these looks would be perfect for work...if only..

Train rides: the new way to travel

Sure airplanes can get you from point A to point B in lighting speed. You can travel across the country in a matter of hours but now the cons tend to greatly outweigh the benefits of this traveling option. Who needs to deal with the constant hassles? No more than one bag, pay if you need more and the world ends if it’s over fifty lbs (someone please explain to me why having one bag at thirty lbs and one bag at sixty is any worse than having two at fifty lbs.) and don’t even get me started on customs, liquid restrictions, and the recycled air we deal with. Recently two of us traveled a great distant on this classic but undiscovered way to do so, the train. Sure it was a bit of a distance, both on our way to New York one staring in Savannah and the other in Raleigh, we had to endure a lengthy ride but it was no worse than a road trip and distractions help you pass the time. Bring books, movies, or dramine (to knock you out) and you suddenly have a wonderful and much cheaper trip (try getting an $80.00 plane ticket one way!). And the most fabulous perk of traveling by train is the luggage restrictions of lack thereof; we are talking three bags a piece and two carry-ons. Now when you tell someone like me this kind of news I’m instantly elated, a bag for my shoes!

Down to the Wire

So we have been pretty preoccupied with finals lately. We are in the last weeks of class and all our spare time is being spent on projects and papers (that is when we can find the time to peel ourselves from the beautiful spring weather). Thus we apologize for the lateness of this post, we are not neglecting Scuttlebutt it is our little pride and joy so here is a quick glimpse of Brittany's work to tied everyone over until we can properly post.

Casting Fashion Shadows with Architecture

Now is the time to share some of the work from the photographer of the group. Luckily Sami is just as obsessed with fashion as we are. The latest finished collection a series based on the combination and influence architecture and fashion share. It was shot in 4x5 large format film that can be useful in straightening buildings and selective focus. The black and white medium creates a tension in contrast that helps to intensify the settings and figures. Each photo was shot in Savannah lending a historic quality to the subject, which proved to only enhance the contrast idea with modern fashion.

The Oscars of Fashion

Last night was the Met Gala for the costume institute so clearly we were obsessing over young Hollywood's designer choices (I mean what kind of fashionistas would we be if we didn't)? We all had our favorites, the ones we loved, the ones we hated, and the crazy ones that made life interesting.

It was clearly all about the white and neutral look this year, however there were a few pops of color *cough* Katy Perry *cough* that turned our heads. but there is no doubt about it, the designers whether they were dates for celebrities or artists dressing them, did not disappoint.

Yesterday our lives were basically set as we each got to meet a legend in the making. Chris Benz visited SCAD for scad style and we not only got to hear him lecture but got some one on one advice afterward, not to mention a hug! He is basically the most outstanding person alive. And if this was not enough miss Kaitlyn Fields now has some original art work in his studio!! She had a project earlier this year where she had to illustrate a fashion designers collection, her work is amazing, the designer himself said so! so take a look at the soon to be famous Kaitlyn Fields work....


P.S Thank you so much for the amazing advice Chris! You and your panel gave the ultimate lecture with information that will stay with us as we go further in our careers.

Recently we have been joining in some school sponsored activities here in Savannah, GA. Last weekend was the sidewalk arts festival and we thought we would show off our amazing chalk skills with some fashion illustrations. Even the rain couldn't run us off, we had umbrellas and friends and that was all we needed, even our parents joined in on the fun as they were visiting for the weekend, so what do you think, new career choice, professional chalk art??

Royal Day

The Young Victoria comes out on dvd and blue ray today!! go get it immediately! I know I will, it was one of the best movies I have seen this year, the costumes are amazing and the acting is not bad either, usually love stories aren't my thing but this film does it in a realistic yet sweet way that makes you want to watch it over and over again.
